CA took a huge gamble with its latest release and it really paid off. Three Kingdoms offers a very polished campaign with a strong narrative and robust diplomacy and espionage systems. Together with the immersive management of faction characters, the series are steering towards deeper micromanagement and a more challenging and deeply immersive experience. Romance mode might not be everyone's cup of tea but there are also other options for the more historically inclined fans.

Total War: Three Kingdoms is an ideal representation of what it means to be a PC exclusive series in 2019. In addition to having beautiful graphics and a wide-ranging set of features, it fully utilizes a PC player's understanding of turn-based strategy games to provide a complete, full-scale war experience.

After several years, we finally have a true Total War experience in Three Kingdoms. Covering almost everything that a fan of strategy genre craves, Three Kingdoms is one of the most complete entries in the TW series and one of the best strategies in recent years.

Total War: Three Kingdoms provides a solid look at the spectacle, history, and romance of the Three Kingdoms period, as well as being entertaining enough to hold the attention of those who just might not care about that stuff. I don’t know who they are, but I’m sure they’re out there.

A worthy entry in the Total War franchise, Three Kingdoms gets a lot more right than it does wrong.

Three Kingdoms is another solid instalment in the Total War franchise, but lacks a certain wow factor. Creative Assembly has made some clever refinements around the edges of that enduringly addictive strategic core, allowing fans to steep themselves in yet another historic saga. However, there’s a chance that some won’t gel with this new setting or the way Guanzhong’s epic has been adapted. It’s another fun and rewarding take on the series, though we’d struggle to call it a must-buy.

This game is by far the better and the most appreciated by the fans.

I really enjoy the new gameplay's mechanics, the diplomatic system is really improved and deeper, the possibility to play as Romance or Historic Mode is a nice idea to let players choose the way they like to play and live this story.

A tons of hours in view.

    Immersion is back!

Ever since Rome 2, the series seemed to move away from what I liked about it. Apart from the many other problems with them, the games felt more and more comical, to the point that every diplomatic contact literally boiled down to: “Give me gold.” In a ridiculous voice and accent.

I was extremely sceptical of Three Kingdoms, but oh my, TW has been saved! Many reviews will all tell you the same: the combat is delicious, the campaign and backstory are rich and the world realy feels alive and dynamic, lacking the pointless suïcide attacks and dimwitted characters.

There is however, so much more! The new Romance Mode, makes the game more central around your main characters: your generals. They can feel a bit overpowerd at times, charging ahead of your main force and litterally throwing the entire enemy line into chaos. But they can (and often do) also duel eachother, while the rest of the force either stands back or fights around them, without intervering. Running down a fleeing general with your own heroes feels realy satisfying and genuinely hurts the enemy in the long run. No longer feed piles of endless and faceless morons into the grinder. You care when something happens to your family and friends.

Again, there is so much more. Doubt no longer, it’s great! This game instantly imersed me into medieval China! Who would have known!

Characters all seem to have a personality disorder, constantly making pointless proposals and disagreeing to anything reasonable. On a lesser note the UI looks terrible, color and effects galore without much useful information. Anyone that hasn't shelled out 60 dollars wait until a sale, this game offers nothing new. Expand

Game's bloody awful. Negative fun. Save your money.

Exploits aside (like free no upkeep cavalry units that kill everything - I'm sorry, did I say exploit? Working as intended), there is zero strategy to Rock Paper Scissors when Rock beats everything (Cavalry or Catapults). Infantry are an afterthought, and archers are useless. They don't even have Chinese trebuchets, but Western trebuchets with counter-weights (hey, maybe that's why they work so well?).

The voice acting SUCKS. This is a Three Kingdoms game, which's all about passion, romance and characters, and your voice choices are sniveling dweeb or girl with testicles. Expect a hefty dose of PC bullcrap, with characters who could've been interesting, like Sun Ren, dropping her plotting shrew wife schtick and becoming a general (with stats like Sun Ce's for no good reason), and the "Bandit Queen" who only exists in two sentences in the original records that probably were about two different people. Every other general is female, even though all of the citizens of cities are men, so go figure that one out (Maybe they're all home cooking?).

The game is boring lategame. It's scripted early game. It's unfun. Avoid.
