RIOT is not a bad game, but let’s put it this way: the best part of it is that it’s based on real events. We really enjoyed the concept, but we found the gameplay lacking.

There’s no denying that Riot: Civil Unrest is earnest in its attempt to bring game mechanics to a complex, weighty topic, but ultimately it fails to execute on its ambitions, delivering neither a satisfying strategy game nor a novel exploration of its chosen topic beyond its evocative and memorable art style. And as we’ve learned from political movements throughout history, enacting lasting change is about more than presentation.

The concept is interesting without a doubt. Unfortunately the integrated mechanics fail to match the concept, the idealistic foundation or the conflict dynamics portrayed.

It’s quite difficult to ascertain what Riot: Civil Unrest wants to be. The dull and uncontrollable action would fit quite well as a simulator with something to say. However, the title is bogged down with gamified elements that suggest that this product was built for entertainment, with its guitar laden soundtrack and high score chasing elements. Unfortunately, it becomes a mess of both worlds that fails to be either thought provoking or an enjoyable gaming experience.

Frankly, Riot can barely support itself as a strategy game. I don’t predict a riot, but I do predict giving this title a miss.

Perhaps RIOT: Civil Unrest's greatest weakness is it's missing political bite. For a game with such a polarizing subject, RIOT barely scratches the surface as to why these global hardships occur and what we as a people can do to work towards peaceful solutions.
