Their third and undoubtedly best album, U.F.O.F., a mesmerizing flood of life filtered down into a concentrated drip.

Big Thief are accepting the inherent beauty of life's invisible forces and their contemplation with the unknown has led them to a mindful state of raw, celestial power. U.F.O.F. is trembling with mystical energy and is truly one of the year's best records.

Big Thief’s most empathic and ethereal work yet. U.F.O.F. is by no means an album that will grab for your attention, it just rests in the atmosphere like a wavelength, waiting for you to tune in – and you’ll be richly rewarded when you find it.

Now and then, the band delve back into their previous, less rarefied styles. ... Those diversions create moments of gut-wrenching contrast, making hackneyed rock tropes feel surprising again--proof that with this softening of their sound, Big Thief have alighted upon something that packs a real punch.

Mostly you can hear the transcendence of Big Thief as they grapple with characters who come and go, not knowing if they will ever be back, bravely embracing death, and revealing a vulnerability that becomes their biggest strength. Though they travel through the darkness spellbound by life’s biggest mysteries, they manage to emerge more at peace than ever.

It moves according to the oblique logic of the subconscious, entering your mind through the back door. A newfound attention to space has allowed Big Thief to expand their palette even as they’ve brought the volume down.

It feels darker an offering than some of their earlier work, more textured and full of otherworldly sound effects that often only become obvious on multiple listens.

Big Thief’s “U.F.O.F.” is a swirling, weightless indie-folk dream. It’s the ultimate combination of musical strengths, poetic lyricism, and a lifetime of experiences. Possibly the greatest indie-folk effort since Neutral Milk Hotel’s, “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea”. Expand

These are some of the most beautiful, lush tracks I’ve heard in years. The beautiful vocals and instrumentals evoke a sense of calm and peace. I was quite stunned after “UFOF” released easier in the year, but I had no idea it wouldn’t even be the best song on here. That would be “Terminal Paradise,” which might be the most gorgeous song I’ve heard in years. Definitely listen to this! Expand

The voice and lyrics of Lenker are nothing short of something special. Her singing goes from soothing to powerful to fragile but remaining beautiful throughout. Synced and flowing amazingly with the acoustic or electric folk-rock-eqsue accompaniment. Experimentation is often subtle but very present - it gives it a familiar but unique sound. Expand
